Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope final version is Here!
Like always Ubuntu names are a adjactive plus an animal name.
Jaunty means:
1. Having a buoyant or self-confident air; brisk.
2. Crisp and dapper in appearance; natty.
3. Archaic
a. Stylish.
b. Genteel.
Jackalope — also called an antelabbit, aunt benny, “Rabbicorn”, Wyoming thistled hare or stagbunny — is an imaginary animal of folklore and a supposed cross between a jackrabbit and an antelope, goat, or deer, which is usually portrayed as a rabbit with antlers. The word jackalope and antelabbit are portmanteaus.

Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope), released on 23 April 2009,[51] was Canonical’s tenth and latest release of the distribution. It will be supported until October 2010.
New features include:

  • faster boot time
  • new usplash screen
  • new login screen
  • support for both Wacom and Netbooks
  • new notification system, NotifyOSD, and themes.
  • It marked the first time that all of Ubuntu’s core evelopment will be moved to the Bazaar distributed revision control system.

Ubuntu 9.04 uses the Linux 2.6.28 kernel and GNOME 2.26The default file system is ext3 with ext4 available at installation as an option.
It also does come with Office 3.0 and once you upgrade you should get the Open Office 3.0
To upgrade from Ubuntu 8.10 on a desktop system:

  1. Press Alt+F2 and type in “update-manager -d” (without the quotes) into the command box.
  2. Update Manager should open up and tell you: New distribution release ‘9.04? is available.
  3. Click Upgrade and follow the on-screen instructions.

To upgrade from Ubuntu 8.10 on a server system:

  1. install the update-manager-core package if it is not already installed
  2. Set Prompt=normal;
  3. # vim /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades
  4. launch the upgrade tool with the command
  5. # do-release-upgrade
  6. follow the on-screen instructions.

Upgrade can take even longer then 1 hour, but it is worthed the wait.
UNR USB image
This USB image allows you to run Ubuntu Netbook Remix (UNR) from a USB storage device without installing UNR on your computer. While running in this “live” environment you will be running a full desktop environment and have the option to install UNR permanently, as well as installing UNR alongside an existing operating system. This USB image is optimized for netbooks with screens up to 10″. You will need at least 256MB of RAM to install from this image.
