reset esx 4 password

How to reset ESX password 1. Power on the ESX server. At the Grub boot loader, select the “VMware ESX 4.0” entry and press a to modify the kernel arguments. 2. Add a space and the word single to the end of the list of arguments and press Enter. (Note that the first few arguments will scroll off the left hand side of the console.) 3. At the prompt, type the command passwd and press Enter. 4. Enter the command reboot and press Enter. ESX will boot normally.

Well here is quick and easy way to do it?
1. Create a port group on the vSwitch with ID 4095. This will allow the VM
to connect to all available VLANs available to the host.

Howto backup ESX

HOW TO backup ESX 3.0.1 with vmbk.pl

This nice perl script allows online backup of Virtual Machines to a remote FTP/SMB/NFS
It was written by Massimiliano Daneri, and many other authors contributed
it can be downloaded from here

How to install it:

Download and copy to a the ESX server using WinSCP, copy to /etc/vmbk
Login via SSH into the ESX server:
# cd /etc/vmbk
# bash install.sh
Runing the script from /etc/vmbk/ it will work, since the dependencies are in these folders.

Can't locate VMware/VmPerl.pm

Reinstall Perl in ESX

Error: Can’t locate VMware/VmPerl.pm
#vmare-cmd stop working along with all scripts that depend on VMware.pm module.
For some reason my perl VMWare::Perl stoped working, so I reinstall perl 5.8.0 version from scratch
first download it, then do:
#sh Configure -Dusethreads -Duseithreads -Dusemultiplicity -Duselargefiles -Dotherlibdirs=/usr/lib/perl5/5.8.0
#make test
#make
#make install

ESX monitoring

So I got a hard mission, monitor a VMWare ESX 3 Server. I thought it would be easy but I was wrong.
Of course I did with Nagios/Centreon, at first I tried SNMP without much success. So I found out that a smart guy somewhere had gone thru the pain of delevoping some quite amazing script that would do just what I needed.
This guy is Steve Shipway and his site/forum has much information http://www.steveshipway.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=28.
I will focus in monitoring the Server ESX, not its VM hosts.
